If you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), whether it is in its early stages or you are receiving dialysis, you don't have to give up snacking. However, some preparation is necessary so that you may feel comfortable about including snacks on the renal diet.

Snacking is OK on the renal diet as long as you select good choices. A piece of kidney-friendly fruit is a healthier alternative than a tiny bag of sodium-laden potato chips.


What makes a snack healthy?

Many snacks are heavy in saturated fat, sugar, and salt while providing little nutritious benefit. Don't allow your snacks undermine your efforts to achieve your health and fitness objectives!

It may be beneficial to consider your morning snacks as a strategy to achieve your daily nutritional needs, such as by include an extra portion of fruit, vegetables, or grains.

It's also a good idea to select snacks that will not leave you hungry. To feel replete (or satisfied), consume midday or mid-morning snacks with a decent combination of macronutrients: carbs, protein, and healthy fats.
